MEADOWS OF DAN, Virginia – Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) Member Dr. Raymond Smoot, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), project partners, and local and state leaders cut the ribbon today, opening all of Route 58 in Patrick County over Lovers Leap Mountain.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new Route 58 overlook, constructed to provide travelers with a safe location to pull off the roadway and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

These newly opened lanes are part of the $300 million road project, widening 7.4 miles of Route 58 and addressing the safety challenges presented by the steep grade and winding curves that drivers encounter on Lovers Leap Mountain. This section of Route 58 currently restricts tractor trailers. This truck restriction will be removed by the end of 2026 when all the improvements are completed.

“Once complete, the entire commonwealth gains a safer, modern mountain crossing, a stronger tourism gateway, better positioning for business recruitment and integration into a statewide economic corridor,” said CTB Member Dr. Raymond Smoot. “This project will make a difference for the thousands of commuters, travelers and truckers who use Route 58 today, tomorrow and in the future and I am looking forward to seeing where the road will take us.”

Route 58 is Virginia's longest roadway, stretching more than 500 miles along the southern portion of the state. The Route 58 Lovers Leap project is a part of the U.S. Route 58 Corridor Development Program that was enacted by the Virginia General Assembly in 1989 to enhance economic growth potential and to provide an adequate, modern, safe and efficient highway system along Virginia's southern boundary.

“This project will offer a safer and more navigable route for freight traffic, visitors and Virginians and position this area for growth and opportunity in the future,” said Ken King, VDOT Salem District Engineer. “The General Assembly prioritized funding for the project in 2013, and in 2019, VDOT and our partner Branch Civil, began working together to refine the design and advance the project to construction.”

As this project nears completion, it will expand economic opportunities and provide a safer and more efficient highway system that will better connect Interstate 77 to the Port of Virginia in Hampton Roads. This means a reliable, continuous link from the rural area of southwest Virginia to the Atlantic Ocean.

The project starts a quarter mile west of the Poor Farmers Farm store in Vesta and continues 7.4 miles eastward over and down Lovers Leap Mountain, ending at the existing four-lane section of the Route 58 Stuart Bypass.

During construction, the road has been widened to four lanes, improved alignments and grades, expanded the shoulders, added turn lanes at secondary road connections, added a new overlook, as well as enhanced the Lovers Leap Overlook. In addition, brake check areas and escape ramps for trucks have been added.

Delegate Wren Williams (VA-47), Senator Bill Stanley (VA-7), and Congressman Morgan Griffith (US-9) also delivered remarks underscoring Route 58’s importance to the region and the commonwealth’s economic development.

“This boosts mobility for commercial vehicles, commuters, tourists and residents which drives inter-regional commerce and travel.  This also improves access to urban centers like Danville and Martinsville, facilitates rural development, and integrates local economies with state and interstate systems,” said Dr. Smoot.

The mountainous terrain and amount of excavation make this a significant project. Construction crews excavated more than nine million cubic yards of soil and rock on Lovers Leap Mountain at elevations that range between 1,300 and 3,000 feet.

While the project is in the final completion stages, drivers may still encounter temporary lane closures and flagging operations while crews install new signs and guardrail.

Adjoining the Route 58 Lovers Leap widening project, construction is now underway on the four-mile Route 58 Vesta widening project.
