FREDERICKSBURG – Traffic on Route 695 (Windmill Point Road) in Lancaster County will begin using a temporary bridge to cross Oyster Creek on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Traffic will use the single-lane temporary bridge until construction to build a new bridge is finished in May 2027.
Due to the dimensions of the temporary bridge, a vehicle width restriction of 13 feet, 6 inches will go into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Advance width restriction signs will be posted.
A temporary traffic signal will continue to control one-way, alternating traffic on Windmill Point Road in this work zone. The signal will control traffic 24 hours a day until the project is complete.
A temporary speed limit of 25 mph is also posted in the work zone and will remain in effect until construction is complete.
Vehicles of all legal weights, up to 45 tons, can cross the temporary bridge.
The eastern intersection of Route 656 (Oyster Creek Drive) with Windmill Point Road remains closed due to its proximity to the work zone. Travelers seeking Oyster Creek Drive should use the western intersection with Windmill Point Road during the project.
The existing bridge was built in 1930 and has two 9-foot-wide travel lanes with minimal shoulders. The new bridge will continue to have two travel lanes, but each lane will be 11 feet wide, with 4-foot-wide shoulders on each side. The bridge rail will be 42 inches high.
The replacement bridge will also be able to carry vehicles of all legal weights.
An average of 500 vehicles a day cross Oyster Creek on Windmill Point Road.
The $10.3 million project is being funded through Virginia's State of Good Repair program.
The project contractor is Kokosing Construction Company, Inc.
