I-64 HRBT reopens early following completion of all tunnel repaving
NORFOLK/HAMPTON — The I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) reopened eastbound toward Norfolk ahead of schedule Sunday, Oct. 18, following completion of repaving work in both eastbound travel lanes. With westbound repaving completed earlier this month, all planned repaving work in both directions of the HRBT is finished.
Crews worked Friday night through Sunday to complete milling, paving and pavement markings in both eastbound travel lanes. The closure began late Friday, Oct. 16, and was originally scheduled to remain in place through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19.
With all planned tunnel repaving finished over only three weekends, VDOT has eliminated the need for the final scheduled closure of Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The designated backup weekends of Nov. 6-9 and Nov. 13-16 are also not needed.
The repaving addressed deteriorating pavement conditions, including cracking and rutting. The new pavement in both tunnels will provide a smoother, longer-lasting roadway surface for motorists.
