DRPT Launches Second Phase of 2026 Statewide Rail Plan Survey
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) has officially launched the second phase of a public input survey to help guide the development of the 2026 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan.
The agency wants to hear from residents, businesses owners, community members and other travelers about what the future of rail in Virginia should look like. The survey is available from now through early November, takes 5-10 minutes to complete and builds off the insights gathered from the first phase of surveys conducted in March and subsequent public and stakeholder meetings.

Survey respondents will be asked to provide input on strategies to support freight and passenger rail, key strategies for enhanced service, and safety. By completing the survey, respondents have the option to enter a drawing for two roundtrip Amtrak Northeast Regional tickets.
DRPT updates the Statewide Rail Plan every four years to establish a framework for the future of rail in Virginia in the short and long term. The survey, conducted in collaboration with the University of Virginia’s Institute for Engagement and Negotiation, will inform the final plan, to be released in early 2027. The previous update to the Statewide Rail Plan was conducted in 2022 and laid the foundation for major investment decisions, including the pursuit of federal funding through the Corridor Identification and Development program.
