Rolling Road daytime flagging operation and intermittent stoppages continue in West Springfield Oct. 2 & 5-8
WEST SPRINGFIELD – Weather permitting, from Friday, Oct. 2, through Thursday, Oct. 8, Rolling Road (Route 638) between Hunter Village Drive/Tanworth Drive and Old Keene Mill Road will continue to have flagging and intermittent stoppages on weekdays to implement long-term traffic shifts as part of the Rolling Road widening project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
On Friday, Oct. 2; Monday, Oct. 5; Tuesday, Oct. 6; Wednesday, Oct. 7; and Thursday, Oct. 8, this stretch of Rolling Road will have one lane of alternating traffic via flagging between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. There will also be intermittent full traffic stoppages lasting no more than 15 minutes each between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. The Rolling Road intersections at Taunton Place and Viola Street will be right in, right out only during this shift.
By the time the flagging is complete on or about Thursday, Oct. 8, the long-term Rolling Road traffic shifts will be in place as follows:
- Hunter Village Drive/Tanworth Drive to Birmingham Lane: Northbound Rolling Road traffic will be shifted to the right, so that the northbound and southbound lanes will run together along the west side of the roadway. This shift is needed to allow construction to occur along the east side of the roadway.
- Birmingham Lane to Kenwood Avenue: Southbound Rolling Road traffic will be shifted to the left, so that the northbound and southbound lanes will run together along the east side of the roadway. This shift is needed to allow construction to occur along the west side of the roadway.
Access will be maintained to all properties along Rolling Road during these traffic shifts, which are scheduled to be in place until late 2027.
Birmingham Lane will remain closed at Rolling Road for intersection work for another few weeks.
The Rolling Road widening project is:
- Widening about a mile and a half of Rolling Road from two lanes to four with a raised median, shared-use path and sidewalk between Viola Street and Kenwood Avenue.
- Constructing a new traffic signal at Rolling Road and Greeley Boulevard.
- Upgrading the traffic signal at Rolling Road and Barnack Drive.
- Making access management and stormwater improvements.
The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
