Work begins in Albemarle County at Routes 53 and 20

CULPEPER – As early as Monday, Sept. 14, a Virginia Department of Transportation contractor will begin work on a new roundabout at the intersection of Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) and Route 20 (Scottsville Road) in Albemarle County.

This improvement wil convert the existing signalized intersection to a hybrid, multi-lane roundabout. The three-leg roundabout will use channelization for right turns from Route 53 onto Route 20. The project also includes a shared-use path along Route 20.

The roundabout will improve motorist safety by reducing conflict points and the potential for crashes. It will also provide improved access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

This improvement is part of the $42.3 million Albemarle Intersection Design-Build Bundle 2, which will deliver five intersection improvements under a single design-build contract. The new roundabout at Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), Route 240 (Three Notched Road), and Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike) was completed in July 2026. The following remaining improvements are under construction:

  • A roundabout at Route 631 (Rio Road East) and John Warner Parkway
  • A roundabout at Route 20 (Scottsville Road) and Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway)
  • A continuous green-T intersection (CGT) at Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson parkway)

The expected completion date for this project bundle is Nov. 11, 2027.

Projects in this bundle are funded by SMART SCALE and/or the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

Drivers should use extreme caution when traveling through the work zone and watch for workers and flagging teams in and near the roadway. All work is weather permitting.

VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock. The independent city of Charlottesville maintains its own roads.
