Overnight I-95 Traffic Stops in Caroline County on Tuesday, Sept. 1

Northbound and southbound traffic will be stopped twice for approximately 15 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for Dominion Energy utility work

FREDERICKSBURG – All Interstate 95 traffic in Caroline County will be briefly stopped twice between midnight and 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, to allow Dominion Energy crews to install equipment over the travel lanes under permit.

Traffic will be stopped at mile marker 115, which is several miles south of exit 118 (Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County. Each traffic stop will last approximately 15 minutes.

Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control.

Dominion Energy crews are preparing to install new utility lines that will span the interstate at mile marker 115. To reduce travel delays, crews are first installing temporary netting over the interstate. The netting will allow most utility work to proceed 24 hours a day without traffic stops or lane closures. Traffic stops and lane closures will be limited to brief periods to install and remove the netting.

Once installed, the netting will remain in place for an estimated two weeks.

The netting will have a vertical clearance of 21 feet over the interstate, which meets Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) requirements to accommodate all vehicle heights. The netting will be approximately 25 feet wide.

I-95 traffic stops are scheduled to occur weather permitting. If work is canceled on Sept. 1, the traffic stops will be rescheduled to occur between midnight and 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, with another potential backup date of Thursday, Sept. 3.

In addition to the traffic stops, a single travel lane will close in the work zone on northbound and southbound I-95 at 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, and reopen at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1.
