Traffic Alert: Blasting and slow rolls scheduled on Interstate 81 in Roanoke and Botetourt counties

SALEM - As part of the ongoing Interstate 81 widening project between exits 143 to 150 in Roanoke and Botetourt counties, drivers can expect noise and delays due to blasting and slow rolls on Interstate 81.

Starting the week of August 24, blasting will occur for about eight weeks between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday through Thursday. Exact days and times will be communicated weekly. Message boards will alert drivers.

Slow rolls will be used in both directions:

  • Northbound lanes beginning at the 146 on-ramp (Plantation Road)
  • Southbound lanes beginning at the 156 on-ramp (Troutville)

During a slow roll, law enforcement will slow and possibly stop traffic to allow for a safe and traffic-free space on the roadway within the construction zone during blasting operations. Each slow roll is anticipated to last up to 15 minutes.

Drivers should expect loud noises and are encouraged to allow extra travel time. Updated information will appear on message boards in the area.

Expect delays, heavy congestion and use alternate routes.

In addition, in the coming days, construction entrances will be finished along the inside left lane northbound and southbound next to the median and existing barrier wall. Lane markings in yellow and movement of barrier walls will allow space for a modified turn lane on the interstate for these trucks to use to enter the work areas. These entrances are for construction and delivery trucks entering the work zone only and signage will be posted accordingly. Drivers should watch for trucks slowing down for access and allow them space as needed.
