Roadway Improvements Begin in Late August at Wilson School Complex in Augusta County
STAUNTON – A roadway project that will reduce congestion and enhance safety at the Wilson complex in Augusta County is scheduled to start during the week of August 24, 2026. To minimize traffic disruptions, construction will take place in two distinct phases during the coming school year and next summer.
The Wilson complex near Fishersville includes three Augusta County public schools, three regional education centers, some residential development and the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center. The only access road is Woodrow Wilson Avenue (Route 358), a two-lane roadway off Route 250 (Jefferson Highway).
The Virginia Department of Transportation will add a second inbound (northbound) lane to Wilson Avenue, add new turn lanes at its intersection with Route 250, and construct a roundabout at its intersection with Hornet Road and Vo Tech Road.
Throughout the 2026-27 school year, VDOT contractors will focus on the Wilson Avenue widening and intersection improvements at Route 250. There will be 24/7 shoulder closures along Wilson Avenue. Flagger traffic control will be limited to weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Upon completion of the school year in late May 2027, contractors will construct the roundabout at the Wilson/Hornet/Vo Tech intersection. The roundabout will be paved and open to traffic in time for the 2027-28 school year. All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

In July 2026 VDOT awarded a $3.8 million contract to A & J Development and Excavation Inc. of Mount Crawford, Va., with scheduled completion in September 2027. Augusta County applied for and received funding for the roadway widening and roundabout through Virginia’s SMART SCALE program.
